On tour with Annihilator : it’s gonna thrash !

Our story begins in Switzerland, in Pratteln near Basel, on the 1st of November behind the Z7 venue. The zone is industrial… metal! There is already a fan who has spotted the red bus and the cover of their latest album is carefully placed on the top of a cardboard box, waiting to be signed. His collection is almost complete. Annihilator have already achieved over half of their European tour as the headliners in 2010 and everything seems to be going well for them.

In the words of Jeff Waters, promotion in local areas is not very important. There was a time when labels used to hire companies from each country to ensure such promotion. In Ottawa, where band’s main man lives, you can just open up a newspaper a day or two before the artist’s concert and there is an article on the person. In 2010, Jeff Waters admitted that this was the first time that he was on tour with such a small amount of local promotion for the band. And yet, to his great surprise, the shows were all fully packed. The internet has replaced usual music promotion, people share information via social networking sites and the band’s management saw an opening.

EVILE LONDON

[imgr_w=180]#images#/posts/2010/03/EvileUnderworld1.jpg[/imgr_w]It’s the start of the Infected Nations tour to continue promoting their new album with the same name and it is mainly a fresh new start for Evile. After the sudden death of their beloved bassist Mike Alexander, from now on it is Joel Graham who will be replacing him in the English band.

The aim of the tour will be to pick up things where they had left them and to introduce Joel to their fans. It is also a unique moment for the band, who are still appearing fragile, to finally turn the page.

God is an Astronaut : Live in London

[imgr_w=210]#images#/posts/2010/02/godisanastronautlivereport0.jpg[/imgr_w]Amongst the plethora of rock and metal musical styles there is one that had only emerged in the last 20 to 30 years and has only gained some notoriety in maybe the last 15 years. This style uses the common rock instruments, aided by lots of effects (reminiscent of the shoe-gaze era) and overall a big emphasis on the instrumental side, while the vocals, if present, are only punctuating the atmosphere.
Musically, they are something in between the aggressive riffing of genres like thrash metal and the extreme melodic technicality of progressive styles, with the effects changing the soundscape from band to band. But as people prefer to use short words when they refer to something, this whole movement was encompassed in the term post-rock.

[url=#article#]Last week, the Institute of Contemporary Arts in London decided to offer us a night with three bands that are active in this domain, with the very popular God is an Astronaut headlining[/url].

Nevermind the imperfections

[imgr_h=210]#images#/posts/2010/02/thegatheringlivereport0.JPG[/imgr_h]This month the Gathering were on the winter trail to promote their latest album, The West Pole, and mainly to introduce the voice and face of their new female singer, Silje Wergeland. Throughout this French tour, the band were supported by the bands fellow Dutch comrades Autumn and the Osm oz frenchies.

As a starter for their show in Lyon that very same night, The Gathering unplugged themselves for a half hour acoustic set in the music shop Gilbert Joseph at the Carré de Soie Vaulx-en-Velin. Those present at the intimate session were Silje Wergeland (vocals), Marjolein Kooijman (guitar) and Frank Boeijen (keyboard), who followed up with a traditional signing session.

Lacuna Coil : Live In London

[imgr_w=210]#images#/posts/2010/02/lacunacoilintro.jpg[/imgr_w]Lacuna Coil has had a quick ascent in the musical business, having reached notoriety after only a couple of albums. Many people argue though that this is only because of the fabulous looks of the female vocalist Cristina Scabbia and their music is not very inspired, especially after they’ve switched styles with Karmacode.
On the other hand, their fan base is big enough to swallow all of the critic so rather than trying to make sense of all the chatter, we decided it is best to attend a live concert of the band so we can find out for ourselves if there is more music than the looks.

[url=#article#]The opportunity came soon enough when the European tour of their latest album Shallow Life scheduled an evening in London, at the Shepherd’s Bush Empire.[/url]

Stratovarius: again and again

[imgr_w=250]#images#/posts/2010/01/s33logo.jpg[/imgr_w]In the past five years, [urlb=http://www.myspace.com/officialstratovarius]Stratovarius[/urlb] have known almost as many splits and reunions as they have album releases and tours – to the great dismay of the fans, and to the sheer pleasure of us “journalists”, who can’t live without a healthy dose of drama.

According to Matias Kupianen, this is all over.

The man, whom we met shortly before the Villeurbanne show, seems to be naturally anxious and does his best to avoid meeting our gaze. Joining a band is one thing – filling in for a long-time member is another. And standing in for the band’s founder, without whom everybody thought Stratovarius was dead, cannot be an easy task…

French Kiss for Wasp

[imgr_w=240]#images#/posts/2009/12/wasp4.JPG[/imgr_w]Believe it or not, Wasp withholds a 25 year career with a sulphurous start and a heap of provocations. Picture the album cover for Animal (Fuck Like A Beast) and think of the outrage it provoked back in the day before the more recent Marilyn Manson. This was to be the beginning for shock rock. Yet what is left of all that in 2009? Can good old Blackie manage to heat things up in frozen Paris on this 15th of December? Not so much it turns out.

Chains to Heaven

[imgr_w=220]#images#/posts/2009/12/aliceinchainslivereport.jpg[/imgr_w] How can you hold back the tears? How can you not feel real emotions when you go to an Alice In Chains concert? Alice In Chains live: we had dreamed of the moment, and to be honest, we had given up hope. However, the dream finally came true on this Friday 4th of December 2009. Jerry Cantrell’s band were there, in front of our dumbfounded eyes, to make us relive all of their 90s hits and new album, Black Gives Way To Blue, a massive album for 2009. Box office is closed and the Bataclan is steaming us, this is where it all happened.

MEGADETH AND SLAYER IN SYDNEY : “SLAYADETH !!! SLAYADETH !!!”

[imgr_w=150]#images#/posts/2009/10/slayadeth livereport2.JPEG[/imgr_w] Endgame and World Painted Blood have been available in shops since recently. In fact, their authors Megadeth and Slayer, are incredibly proud of them. According to Dave Mustaine, Endgame is apparently even better than Death Magnetic…

However, the repertoire offered by Slayer and Megadeth on this 8th of October in Sydney is mainly based on their classics.

[imgr_w=150]#images#/posts/2009/10/cannibalcorpse livereport6.jpg[/imgr_w]
Lyons was the setting of an extreme metal revival this month. Only five days after Marduk’s show, it’s Cannibal Corpse’s turn to tread the boards. For the occasion, the American band was playing with Dying Fetus, Obscura and Evocation.
