Pain Of Salvation: looking back on the departures

These past few months have been pretty eventful for Pain Of Salvation! Right in the middle of the band’s promotion for Road Salt 2, two longstanding musicians decided one after the other to leave the ship. First it was Johan Hallgren, not only a gifted guitarist but also a talented vocalist and a strong element on stage, due to his dazzling charisma and rare energy. He was followed by keyboard player Fredrik Hermansson, more discreet but known for the delicacy and sensitivity of his playing skills. Needless to say, after these two announcements, Pain Of Salvation looked a little the worse for wear. All the more so since the band had yet to find a permanent bassist after Kristoffer Gildenlöw, Daniel’s brother, left, six years ago.

Even if the band took the time to communicate about these departures – claiming family reasons for Hallgren’s –, even if had talked about this with drummer Léo Margarit, several questions remained, especially regarding Hermansson desertion. We took advantage of the band’s stay in Paris on November 16th to ask a few questions to the captain, Daniel Gildenlöw. Particularly tired that night, he was nevertheless talkative and went very deep in his answer.

Since the interview, new musicians have been hired, at least for the shows: Daniel Karlsson, the original bassist, who, as Daniel explained, had already replaced Hermansson behind the keyboards for a few shows before going back to the bass, then to the keyboards when Hermansson left for good (phew!), Gustaf Hielm, Meshuggah’s former bassit, and one Ragnar Zolberg on guitar.

Steven Wilson sends the metal mindset back to the foundry

Some interviews are so interesting you don’t even know how to introduce them. People who read us regularly are used to read outstanding quotes from the interview under each picture. You have no idea how difficult it was to pick these quotes from this interview: Steven Wilson got a lot to tell. About the evolution of the music industry and the “iPod generation”, the independence of an artiste from his fans, creativity in general…

And he’s never at a loss for words. Lately, he’s been very critical towards metal, a genre he considers not creative anymore. During this lengthy interview (more than forty minutes), we went back at length over his comments so he could expand on his points, on which we are waiting your reaction in the comments part.

Then we talked about all his current projects: a solo album, his project with Mikael Akerfeldt (Opeth), and not to mention of course Porcupine Tree’s future.

Enjoy…

Music Premieres

Sneak-Preview: Opeth takes you to their orchard to taste the fruit of their passion

“The music is all over the place.” declared Opeth’s frontman Mikael Åkerfeldt a few weeks ago, as he tried to describe Heritage, the band’s new album. And when at the mention of Morbid Angel’s last and controversial album “Illud Divinum Isanus” he confesses that he respects “bands that do things differently”, he also seems to be promoting his own cause. In an interview recently granted to our Canadian colleagues Brave Words & Bloody Knuckles, he goes into detail. He mentions a title, ‘Slither’, a sort of tribute to Ronnie James Dio and declares that the album swings between folk, progressive rock and jazz, while being influenced by Pink Floyd and Fusion music like Herbie Hancock or Weather Report. He also adds that the ex-drummer/percussionist from Weather Report Alex Acuña appears as a guest, as well as a “Swedish fusion flutist who plays a flute solo to a doomy riff”. And there is the cover artwork, wonderful and surprising. For sure, Heritage will be different. Not that Opeth was until now resting on their laurels, but the band seems to have crossed new frontiers and used more licence in their creativity. All for the better! That is what makes the difference between average artists and great artists. There is no risk in art, only boldness.

We could speculate for hours on the nature of Heritage, but only the music will answer our curiosity and quench the music lover’s thirst. In collaboration with Roadrunner, we give you the opportunity to listen to the very first extract of this event-album, which will be released on the 20th of September. Named ‘The Devil’s Orchard’, the song surprises us with its jazzy rhythms and guitars, and bewitches us with its singular atmosphere. But even if that song confirms the above-mentioned declarations and that Åkerfeldt only sings in a clear voice, one can still recognize the hand of the Swedish band. A good omen for the coming album.

You can judge for yourself:

Opeth: information-hunting in the toilet

Every new Opeth release is quite a formidable event in the metal world. And as it happens, the Swedish quintet will deliver their tenth record, entitled Heritage, on 20th September. We met frontman Mikael Åkerfeldt a few hours before he was to tread the boards at Clisson on 19th June, and took this opportunity to ask him a few questions in a very relaxed manner. Said questions revolved around this new album, the departure of keyboardist Per Wiberg and the status of his project with Steven Wilson (Porcupine Tree).

But before that, in order to stay true to ourselves, we couldn’t resist talking about an anecdote according to which Mikael was once caught in the toilet doing number two when the show intro started to play : “It’s true and it was one of those rubber shits that never ends! I had to go on stage unfinished but nobody knows… There was another time were everybody had to go to the toilet before the show and somebody clogged the toilet up. We flushed it right before going on stage and shit just came out all over the floor. The intro was running and we were laughing so hard that we couldn’t look cool!” This kind of fecal misadventure would probably have been better suited for Mikael’s other band, Bloodbath, than for the very classy Opeth: ” Yeah shit is part of our image”, the singer agrees. Maybe Bloodbath should make that the theme of one of their future songs? “Yeah ! Maybe we should. That’s good inspiration.”

DEVIN TOWNSEND PROJECT: DECONSTRUCTION DISSECTED

Deconstruction and Ghost are probably two of the most eagerly awaited records of the year for many metal fans. These albums make up the second half of the tetralogy initiated last year by Devin Townsend with the acoustic Ki and the lively Addicted. The master knows how to titillate our curiosity when it comes to describing his work. He thus affirmed that Deconstruction “just sounds like a journey up my own ass in a lot of ways”. Speaking of which, we asked Devin to explain what he meant by that when we met him at the Hellfest in 2010. To which he concluded: “I have a very interesting ass”. A statement his former buddy Gene Hoglan undermined by saying: “Devin’s ass is like two elbows put together. I have to admit that I found Byron’s (Stroud) ass way more interesting than Devin’s”. Who should we believe here?

To decide between the two men, let’s take a look at this detailed track-by-track of Deconstruction…
