Coroner : we agreed to meet up in a year’s time…

Precisely one year ago, Hellfest festival goers discovered the Coroner banner announcing that the band would be reforming for the 2011 edition of the festival. In fact we had the opportunity to speak with guitarist of the trio, Tommy Vetterli, who still seemed quite sceptic about the future of the band. He admitted having doubts about whether the band would be up to the challenge, even considering withdrawing if they were unsure of themselves, making an album was also not on their mind, etc.

A year later, on the 19th of June 2011, Coroner made it to the stage and performed an outstanding show for the Hellfest crowd. According to this, we simply had to speak with Tommy again in order to find out about his outlook today, see what future perspectives Coroner are considering and about many other things.

Here is the report of our conversation.

News From The Front

Hellfest organizer explains Satanic Warmaster’s cancelation

Following the latest announcement from the Hellfest about the confirmed bands for it’s 2011 edition, there have been surprised reactions, across the internet, about a band in particular, and its disappearance from the festival’s bill : Satanic Warmaster. The finnish one-man-band led by Satanic Tyrant Werwolf seems to have been the victim of a protest stronger than Christine Boutin (translator’s note: a politician who tried to have the festival cancelled) which managed to force the festival’s organizers to do something we weren’t expecting.

Here’s what Werwolf announced on his band’s Facebook page : “It has been brought to my attention, that the organizers of the festival cannot hold on to our agreement to have Satanic Warmaster perform at the 2011 Hellfest. This was because of pressure put to the organizers by other artists booked on the festival.”

Coroner : the existential matter

[imgr_h=222]#images#/posts/2010/07/tommy-vetterli.jpg[/imgr_h]Coroner’s fans who were at the Hellfest this year were stunned to discover banners announcing Coroner as part of the 2011 edition of the festival, including the special mention “reunion show”. Stunned, because since they split up in 1995, this mythical progressive thrash metal band has always made it clear that there’s no way they would reunite. To the great displeasure of the fans who resigned, even if they kept on dreaming of seeing what was impossible becoming possible. Therefore, when they stumbled upon this ad they inevitably pinched themselves just to be sure they were not dreaming again.

This Swiss band, composed with Ron Broder (aka Ron Royce), Tommy Vetterli (aka Tommy T. Baron), and Marky Edelmann (aka Marquis Marky), has put out some of the greatest and most innovative music the metal world has ever known. In that regard, they became one of the most respected bands from the connoisseurs. Listen to such marvels like Mental Vortex or Grin: these albums are still ahead of our time.

Coroner’s presence at the 2011 Hellfest programming leads automatically to thousands of questionings. Therefore, we at Radio Metal tried to get some more information. By chance, at the same festival this year, Tommy Vetterli was here to help 69 Chambers out – the band of his lovely wife-to-be – bringing a little bit of his own magic to the stage. One of our performing monkeys caught Tommy right after the show in order to have a little chat with him. All the answers to the fans’ questions are here to be found, even though they are probably not what they expect… The least we can say is that Tommy is both a chilled out and quite frank person. He is not the kind of man who wonders too much, it is at least the way we felt meeting him. But when he has to answer questions he does not beat about the bush! He also made some revelations about Kreator, a band he has joined for two really controversial albums, and especially about its leader, Mille Petrozza, which are… quite a surprise!

Press Conference

Alice Cooper talks about his nightmare…

[imgr_w=280]#images#/posts/2010/06/alicecooper-conf.jpg[/imgr_w]A few hours before he put the entire Hellfest at his feet, Alice was kind enough to organize a small press conference. Radio Metal and its armada of snoopers could not possibly miss such a good opportunity to glean a few pieces of information and sent an emissary to join a handful of colleagues. The game, however, was not easily won: as Olivier Garnier, promotion manager, told us, Alice Cooper didn’t want this press conference to take place during the Twisted Sister show. Why, you ask? Because he wanted the journalists to go and see Dee Snider’s gang rock the stage rather than listen to his own ramblings. Alice confesses his great respect and friendship with Twisted Sister, and particularly with their frontman.

Hellfest and communication

[imgr_w=260]#images#/posts/2010/04/yoann1.jpg[/imgr_w]Yoann Le Nevé is the co-founder of Furyfest which later became [urlb=http://www.hellfest.fr/]Hellfest[/urlb] in 2006. Yoann accepted to answer to Doc’s questions concerning the festival’s evolution in terms of communication and promotion in complete honesty. Our interviewee, who is in charge of handling financial partners as well as being head of communications, explains the difficulties that a festival such as Hellfest can encounter with the various important people in the metal scene. Notably, Yoann mentions their recent complicated relationship with the English.

An informative interview on the national and international metal world, mentioning the media, politics and the economy. Jeff Mallet, communication manager, also answered to Radio Metal questions at the end of the article.

HELLFEST 2009 BY DOC’

[imgr_w=150]#images#/posts/2009/06/hellfest2009livereport_1921_06_20092/hellfestttt.jpg[/imgr_w]Radio Metal had an excellent Hellfest 2009 – great shows, very good organisation, nice times.
After the release of our report of these insane three days, on 24th June, we decided to write an unusual tour report of the event. Here’s Doc’s account, intended to describe the festival from behind the scenes – in a very subjective way, of course.

Note from Doc’ to his colleagues: [url=#article#]“at last I’m going to have fun, you suckers!”[/url]
