Pain Of Salvation: Léo Margarit, the other French touch in Sweden

After Daniel Guildenlöw, the mastermind behind Pain Of Salvation, three months ago, it was drummer Léo Margarit’s turn to answer our questions in Anarchy-X on October 25th.

Léo joined the Swedish band in 2007 following the departure of Johan Langell. Given the vibe and playing of the later, we could expect his replacement to be difficult; however it is now obvious that Léo has managed to find his place within the band and regarding the fans. Nothing that surprising after all, given his talent first as a drummer but also as a vocalist, a determining criteria for Pain Of Salvation since the vocal harmonies have an important place in the band’s music.

We had Léo on the phone. This was the opportunity to sum things up with him and talk about the two albums he has done with the band. Two very particular albums in the band history since they let aside the metal component for a more seventies feel. We’ve also tried to find out more about the recent departure of Johan HHallgren, guitarist and vocalist for whom it will, without a doubt, be tough to find a replacement.

Worth noting, Léo has also worked with the band Zubrowska and has took part in Within Temptation’s guitarist Ruud Jolie’s new project called For All We Know, which was released last april, among others.

Steven Wilson sends the metal mindset back to the foundry

Some interviews are so interesting you don’t even know how to introduce them. People who read us regularly are used to read outstanding quotes from the interview under each picture. You have no idea how difficult it was to pick these quotes from this interview: Steven Wilson got a lot to tell. About the evolution of the music industry and the “iPod generation”, the independence of an artiste from his fans, creativity in general…

And he’s never at a loss for words. Lately, he’s been very critical towards metal, a genre he considers not creative anymore. During this lengthy interview (more than forty minutes), we went back at length over his comments so he could expand on his points, on which we are waiting your reaction in the comments part.

Then we talked about all his current projects: a solo album, his project with Mikael Akerfeldt (Opeth), and not to mention of course Porcupine Tree’s future.

Enjoy…

Sneak-Preview: Opeth takes you to their orchard to taste the fruit of their passion

“The music is all over the place.” declared Opeth’s frontman Mikael Åkerfeldt a few weeks ago, as he tried to describe Heritage, the band’s new album. And when at the mention of Morbid Angel’s last and controversial album “Illud Divinum Isanus” he confesses that he respects “bands that do things differently”, he also seems to be promoting his own cause. In an interview recently granted to our Canadian colleagues Brave Words & Bloody Knuckles, he goes into detail. He mentions a title, ‘Slither’, a sort of tribute to Ronnie James Dio and declares that the album swings between folk, progressive rock and jazz, while being influenced by Pink Floyd and Fusion music like Herbie Hancock or Weather Report. He also adds that the ex-drummer/percussionist from Weather Report Alex Acuña appears as a guest, as well as a “Swedish fusion flutist who plays a flute solo to a doomy riff”. And there is the cover artwork, wonderful and surprising. For sure, Heritage will be different. Not that Opeth was until now resting on their laurels, but the band seems to have crossed new frontiers and used more licence in their creativity. All for the better! That is what makes the difference between average artists and great artists. There is no risk in art, only boldness.

We could speculate for hours on the nature of Heritage, but only the music will answer our curiosity and quench the music lover’s thirst. In collaboration with Roadrunner, we give you the opportunity to listen to the very first extract of this event-album, which will be released on the 20th of September. Named ‘The Devil’s Orchard’, the song surprises us with its jazzy rhythms and guitars, and bewitches us with its singular atmosphere. But even if that song confirms the above-mentioned declarations and that Åkerfeldt only sings in a clear voice, one can still recognize the hand of the Swedish band. A good omen for the coming album.

You can judge for yourself:

Opeth: information-hunting in the toilet

Every new Opeth release is quite a formidable event in the metal world. And as it happens, the Swedish quintet will deliver their tenth record, entitled Heritage, on 20th September. We met frontman Mikael Åkerfeldt a few hours before he was to tread the boards at Clisson on 19th June, and took this opportunity to ask him a few questions in a very relaxed manner. Said questions revolved around this new album, the departure of keyboardist Per Wiberg and the status of his project with Steven Wilson (Porcupine Tree).

But before that, in order to stay true to ourselves, we couldn’t resist talking about an anecdote according to which Mikael was once caught in the toilet doing number two when the show intro started to play : “It’s true and it was one of those rubber shits that never ends! I had to go on stage unfinished but nobody knows… There was another time were everybody had to go to the toilet before the show and somebody clogged the toilet up. We flushed it right before going on stage and shit just came out all over the floor. The intro was running and we were laughing so hard that we couldn’t look cool!” This kind of fecal misadventure would probably have been better suited for Mikael’s other band, Bloodbath, than for the very classy Opeth: ” Yeah shit is part of our image”, the singer agrees. Maybe Bloodbath should make that the theme of one of their future songs? “Yeah ! Maybe we should. That’s good inspiration.”

On Tour With

A day with Opeth

[imgr]#images#/posts/2010/04/opeth11.jpg[/imgr]Paris is a country. At the time of the debate on national identity, the Parisians do not claim to be French but Parisian. I arrive at the Bataclan around 12.00pm. The sky is grey, the weather is dull and there are a dozen of people waiting outside the entrance doors. Most of these people are Parisian yet some of them come from Picardie, Lille and Nancy; some are even from Greece and Spain.

From the outside, the Bataclan venue seems drab and limited. However, once I enter the venue at 3.30pm, I realise that behind this small entrance lies a great theatrical room with bleachers all around it and red velvet cinema chairs. The room is being prepared as I mingle around to get a feel of the working atmosphere here. I see a few people here and there on ladders and pushing boxes around. Others seem more confused as to where to go and what to do. In the meantime, the band comes of stage for their ‘pre-sound check’ before the official sound check. Each member is concentrating on their instrument and plays a few notes.

THE PORTNOY FEST

[imgr_w=180]#images#/posts/2009/10/progressivenationtour livereport8.jpg[/imgr_w]Prog fans also have their festival! A festival where you don’t walk around dressed as Sponge Bob Squarepants, a giant phallus or a Viking, where you don’t spill your beer over your T-shirt and where you don’t meet tall, shirtless, sweaty blond guys.

You don’t waste your time wondering why Araya doesn’t perform the world-famous “yaaaarrrrhhhhhhh” at the beginning of “Angel of Death”. You don’t go into raptures over the incisive aspect of Pestilence vocalist’s “Eurgh! Eurgh!” on “Devouring Frenzy”.
