GOING FOR DOOM
| Monday, March 8th, 2010 at 4:42pm by Spaceman | Interview |
I was born in 1968 in Coventry, England. I first worked as an editor for the punk magazine “Committed Suicide”. Now I have my own record label, Rise Above Records, centered on doom, stoner and psychedelic music. But more than anything, I'm famous as a singer. On stage, I'm known for swallowing my microphone of hanging myself with the cable. I started my career as the frontman of Napalm Death, with whom I recorded the legendary Scum in 1987. In 1989, I founded Cathedral, a doom/stoner band that quickly became one of the biggest references of the genre. I'm about to release the band's ninth album, The Guessing Game. Who am I?That's right! Lee Dorrian is a good answer!
You just won the universal illustrated encyclopedia of doom in 115 volumes, as well as the right to read a very enlightening interview of the master himself.
Who said doing Doom and support Greepeace is inconsistent ?

God Is An Astronaut : Interview With Torsten Kinsella
| Thursday, February 25th, 2010 at 12:32am by Radio Metal | Interview |
God is an Astronaut is not only innovating in terms of sound, but is also one of the bands that decided not release their albums via their own label, managing themselves and thus being completely independent. Last week in London Radio Metal had the opportunity to discuss with Torsten Kinsella, guitarist and mastermind of the band about the consequences of this decision and also the concepts behind the rich sound of God is an Astronaut. As a side-note, Torsten is really fond of speaking about his art as you can see about his quite large answers, especially on the second question where he simply went on and on actually anticipating our questions about their music and the future album. To keep the authenticity we decided to leave that big part of text as it is, showcasing a very good example of an artist discourse.
Rage : Interview With Peavy
| Monday, February 22th, 2010 at 3:35pm by Spaceman | Interview |
After a grey-ish Carved In Stone, Rage managed to release one of their best (the best?) albums in their career. Combining a genius mixture of brilliance, melodic catchiness and poignantly inspired riffs, Strings To A Web is already being considered as one of the major albums of 2010. The band will also be touring through Grillen de Colmar on the 14th of March. We jumped on opportunity to find out more from the leader of the band, Peavy Wagner. Furthermore, Peavy is a proper veteran of the German heavy metal scene. A scene which he joined during the start to mid 80s, as the front man of Anvenger and then Rage, but also Mekong Delta, a cult techno thrash band in which he played under the pseudonym Jake Jenkins. It has to be said that we had high expectations from this interview, however, despite the fact that Peavy was very friendly, his answers remained direct and very brief during our time on the phone.
In Bed With Cristina, Er, Cristiano
| Thursday, February 18th, 2010 at 7:32pm by Radio Metal | Interview |
Lacuna Coil is a band that managed to get through the fact that Italy doesn't have a very large and successful metal scene, achieving quite an important success and being one of the bands that still try to innovate while at the same time staying true to their style. While almost everyone has heard or seen their great female vocalist Cristina Scabbia, Radio Metal wanted to give you something different and so we went to gain an insight from a different member of the band, the guitarist Cristiano Migliore.
AUDREY HORNE: “SEXY PEOPLE WITH SEXY MUSIC”!
| Thursday, February 18th, 2010 at 6:3pm by Spaceman | Interview |
Audrey Horne is a band that is slowly but surely gaining acceptance. Considering the quality of their albums, there's nothing more deserved. In 2005, the band released No Hay Banda (fllowed by an EP, Confession & Alcohol), an impressive first album whose originality is reminiscent of Faith No More, with a characteristic Scandinavian touch. In 2007, Le Fol allowed the band to concert the try.Audrey Horne is now back with a third, self-titled album, like a new beginning. The band may have lost the craziness that marked the first albums, but they have earned a great melodic maturity, still tinged with touching melancholia.
With this new album, it becomes obvious that the Norwegians have earned a choice place in the alternative metal/rock world. Ice Dale, the band's guitarist (who also plays in Enslaved), told us all about this “sexy” new album.
AFTER PARTY WITH IHSAHN
| Thursday, February 11th, 2010 at 8:40pm by Spaceman | Interview |
Ihsahn is an emblematic figure in Norwegian black metal - and beyond - he is a complexe and thoughful character. After which is the new album and third solo piece by Emperor's ex-frontman, is deep and introspective, and will vouch for the previous statement. In a serene tone, Ihsahn gives away the secrets of his album which finalises the trilogy started by The Adversary. It has to be said that Emperor's ex-leader has managed to capture the living soul of each of these albums and that this third one is already being considered as one of his most beautiful masterpieces. According to this, we understand that the serenity in his voice is a result of his great sense of achievement.
This interview was also a way to go back on his musical evolution, as well as, the way he perceives the black metal scene today.
Down And Out
| Thursday, February 11th, 2010 at 3:18pm by Metal'O Phil | Interview |
Life as a musician does not always rhyme with financial success. The most compelling proof of this is the background of Mr. Andy Tillison, who confesses he once went through a difficult phase, during which he was “down and out”, without any money nor roof above his head. It was only logical that this artist with a passion for literature (he's also a writer), progressive rock and Napalm Death (!) called The Tangent's latest album “Down And Out In Paris And London”.Interview.
Matt Drake : Kill Fuck Marry ?
| Wednesday, February 10th, 2010 at 6:29pm by Radio Metal | Interview |
After the tragic death of bassist Mike Alexander, last October, English band Evile are back on tour with their new bassist Joel Graham. Despite the hard times they have had to endure in the recent months, Matt and Joel were enthusiastic to tell us a bit about themselves, as well as the revival of the thrash scene in Europe. Their friendly and down to earth attitude allowed for an interesting and sometimes hilarious interview.
Interview With Andre Matos
| Friday, February 5th, 2010 at 3:36pm by Spaceman | Interview |
Whatever the Doc', who recently admitted to putting Blackie Lawless above every other singer (seriously, judging by the state of the W.A.S.P. Posters in the studio, this is getting sexual), can possibly say, Andre Matos is one of the greatest voices in heavy metal. A classy and elegant frontman, who marked the history of metal with “Angel's Cry” and “Holy Land”, two masterpieces that saw the light of day consecutively around 15 years ago.In 2010, Andre Matos is back to present us his new baby, Mentalize, and it's with great pleasure (obviously shared) that we interviewed him. It's always very nice to talk to a passionate, voluble artist, and Andre is clearly one of those. With an honesty and an integrity that inspire respect, the singer told us all about his past, his relationship with his former bandmates of Angra and the choices he made during his career. But above all, it was also a great opportunity to know more about Mentalize, the singer's second and new album under his own name, and about the next Avantasia album – Tobias Sammet's metal opera in which he took part.
Call Me ?
| Friday, January 29th, 2010 at 00:8am by Metal'O Phil | Interview |
Jordan Rudess has a habit of wandering arond the towns that the Dream Theater tour stop at. Therefore, as a result of these usual little expeditions, in which he admits getting lost in Paris, we get to meet the keyboard player. The thing with Jordan is that he is quite a reasonable person; perhaps a little too much in fact. It's not as if he feels the need to dictate his political beliefs to you, the man is simply pragmatic by nature.
Add to this the fact that our timing, which was imposed by the interview organisers, was incredibly tight (most questions had to be skipped) and the result is a disappointing and consensual interview.
However, the blame can be shared : having been aware of the limited time, we could have made better question choices.
Shame!
Freedom Call : Interview With Chris Bay
| Monday, January 25th, 2010 at 7:51pm by Metal'O Phil | Interview |
The spearhead of melodic heavy/speed metal with candy pink choruses, Freedom Call are back with Legend Of The Shadowking, a concept album about the life of King Ludwig II, a character in the margins of society who found a way out of the reality he didn't belong to in his friend Richard Wagner's music. This album will definitely appeal to the fans of the genre but also brings a few welcome stylistic innovations. Freedom Call is just as kitsch as it used to be, but also darker and more rock'n'roll. We were lucky to interview Chris Bay, the band's frontman, regarding these evolutions, but also concerning his vision of art, his fear of being governed by reptiles, and the obvious danger of women for men.
MY FIRST INTERVIEW: AN ENCOUNTER WITH KORPIKLAANI
| Thursday, January 14th, 2010 at 7:21pm by Sand | Interview |
My very first interview took place in Villeurbanne on the occasion of the Pagan Fest with one of the pioneers of Pagan metal, Korpiklaani. I reach the Transbordeur in late afternoon and wander backstage for a while to discover the other side of the picture (nobody will ever talk enough about these people who do everything they can to ensure the show will go smoothly) before introducing myself to the producer. It is then that I spot familiar faces in the corridor. What on earth are the guys from Kataklysm doing here? That's ridiculous, I'm seeing things. In case of doubt, just keep your mouth shut. Too bad I did keep it shut – because these guys were indeed the members of Kataklysm, who were there to perform as Ex Deo. That'll teach me a lesson!

Welicoruss Interview
| Monday, December 7th, 2009 at 10:55pm by Metal'O Phil | Interview |
Brrr! Welicoruss come straight from the frozen plains of Siberia. The Russian black/pagan/symphonic metal band has been keeping a rather insane rhythm since 2008, between album releases (two albums in two years, and a third planned for 2010 – only Devin Townsend can do better than that!) and numerous shows in Russia, Ukraine and the Baltic countries. The winners of our recent Radio Metal-WSL contest recently replied to our questions. A good opportunity for us to discover the Russian metal scene, quite unknown here in France. On the programme: the band's frantic pace, their future in music and on stage, but also the meaning of the word « Welicoruss » and a Russian view on our relationship to alcohol!
Discover it here!
Oh Judas Priest, Judas Priest, Judas All The Way
| Wednesday, November 25th, 2009 at 1:24pm by Metal'O Phil | Interview |
What if Rob Halford had not been Rob Halford the Metal God ? Would he have permitted himself to be the singer of an average metal band, to release a Christmas album and to launch a clothing line without provoking a few giggles from the most cynical of metal fans ?Rob Halford is one of metal's most untouchable icons. This status doesn't stop him from being a modest talker, who is easygoing (ah, that English composure...), admittedly a bit of an agitator at times, yet sincere and overall quite plain ! His humility, as well as his devotion for the metal world and his fans merely increase the grandeur of such a character.
Rob Halford does NOT infringe upon his status as Metal God.
We discussed his current affairs, such as the creation of the label Metal God Records, the cautious launching of his T-Shirt line, the album Winter Songs and of course the future of Judas Priest, to which he joked : "either way, we'll all be dead soon!"
HOLY HELL, MANOWAR's PROTEGES
| Tuesday, November 17th, 2009 at 11:27am by Metal'O Phil | Interview |
Spaceman and Metal’o Phil actually had a fist fight over who would get to interview the amazing band, Holy Hell. Finally, Spaceman was forced to give up admitting his adversary’s clear superiority. Francisco Palomo (keyboard) therefore told Metal’o Phil all about the band’s performance at Hellfest, the release of their 1st album, as well as the privileged relationship that links them with Manowar. Here’s the interview.
BILLY SHEEHAN (MR BIG): ADDICTED TO THAT BASS
| Friday, November 13th, 2009 at 4:42pm by Spaceman | Interview |
One of this year’s biggest event was no doubt the return of Mr. Big, a band famed for both their virtuosity and their catchy music. To this day, hit songs like “Addicted To That Rush”, “Daddy, Brother, Lover, Little Boy”, and the unforgettable ballad “To Be With You” are still impressive and efficient. Mr. Big comprises of four showmen, all of them endowed with a strong personality and who have now become true legens in their field: the elegant Eric Martin, the childish Paul Gilbert (see Paul Gilbert’s live report), the groovy Pat Torpey and the electrical Billy Sheehan.
The latter, an extremely nice bass hero who’s always been seen at the Steve Vai of low frequences, answered our questions with great honesty and with all the passion burning inside of him. On the programme: the circumstances of Mr. Big’s return, his own approach to music, Kanye West and a little thinking on bearded men!

| Thursday, October 1st, 2009 at 00:0am by Metal'O Phil | Interview |
You don't know Godvlad? This portuguese band gives rock melodies with their two very good singers, Vanessa and Sérgio. There's a Lacuna Coil spirit in Godvlad music. Godvlad are currently in pre-production for their first album with four pre-production songs released on MySpace.
So now it's time for an interview!
Belphegor: Interview With Helmuth
| Tuesday, September 1st, 2009 at 00:0am by Seb | Interview |

Helmuth, the leader of the band, gives some elements of answer in this interview with Radio Metal.

Hugely successful in the United States and getting increasingly famous in Europe: operation "Lamb Of God - Over The World" has begun ! The Americans recently played two dates in France, which you can read about in our live reports on the Radio Metal music platform. We obviously took advantage of their passage in Lyon to converse with them for a few minutes.
