Interview after interview in Heavy Metal Food, I realize that the topic of food fascinates people and my guests are no exceptions. Every one of them gives his opinion on the matter and enlightens us a bit more about our relationship with food and about the difficulty of eating healthily, especially on tour. This week, with Kyuss Lives! I give you the words of a true epicurean, and his words will have you drooling all over them. As far as I am concerned, by the time I reached the end of this interview, I had the most insane craving for barbecue-grilled Spanish sardines.

Daran dans Heavy Metal Food : Dormir Dehors

Libéré des maisons de disques, Daran (connu en France notamment avec Daran Et Les Chaises) quitte un univers confortable, se déracine de son pays et traverse l’Atlantique pour démarrer une nouvelle carrière en terre francophone. Depuis ses débuts, le parcours de Daran est atypique. Musicalement, il a toujours prêté le flanc aux critiques, album après album, rassemblant en même temps un public de plus en plus fourni, des fans fidèles, accros à sa musique et sensibles à la beauté de ses textes.

Tout comme Shurik’n, Daran ne fait pas partie de la sphère musicale du Metal, mais ses propos sur les labels, les médias, la critique, son processus d’écriture ou encore ses prises de position sur l’alimentation sont pertinents. Je voulais m’entretenir avec Daran pour savoir s’il avait quelque chose en lui.

In the kingdom of Ásgard, do you think Odin stuffed Big Macs down his throat while the Valkyries drank some Slim Fast? That the valorous Einherjars finished a pots of Nutella before great battles? They had strong arms to hold a mug of mead and a boar haunch in each hand, in the evening, during their gargantuan meals. Cheers! The food of the gods still exists today. You won’t find it in hypermarkets or in fast food restaurants. It’s in our farmers stalls! Those men and women who bend over backwards in the fields to try to survive the agribusiness and large-scale food retailing. So if you want to feed as the gods do, if you want to be as strong as Odin’s warriors, as well built as Valeria, go buy your food in farmers markets. It’s a healthy act as well as a political statement.

Pensez-vous qu’au royaume d’Ásgard, Odin se goinfrait de Big Mac et que les Valkyries buvaient du Slim Fast ? Que les valeureux Einherjars se pourfendaient les babines avec du Nutella avant les grandes batailles ? Ils avaient des bras puissants pour tenir chope d’Hydromel et cuisse de sanglier dans chaque main, le soir, lors de leurs repas gargantuesques. Santé ! La nourriture des Dieux existe encore de nos jours. Elle ne se trouve pas dans les rayons des hypers ni dans les Fast Food. Elle se trouve sur les étals de nos paysans ! Ces hommes et ces femmes qui courbent l’échine dans nos campagnes pour essayer de survivre à la puissance industrielle de l’Agro-Business et de la grande distribution. Alors si tu veux te nourrir comme les dieux, si tu veux être fort comme un guerrier d’Odin, si tu veux être charpenté comme Valéria, va faire tes courses dans nos marchés paysans. C’est un acte santé et un vrai acte politique.

Au fil de mes entrevues Heavy Metal Food, je me rends compte que le sujet de l’alimentation passionne et ne laisse pas mes invités indifférents. Chacun d’eux apporte son avis sur la question et éclaire un peu plus notre rapport à la nourriture et à la difficulté de se nourrir sainement, encore plus lorsque l’on est en tournée. Cette semaine, avec Kyuss Lives! je vous livre les propos d’un vrai épicurien, propos qui vont vous faire saliver. En ce qui me concerne, j’ai terminé cette entrevue avec une folle envie de sardines espagnoles grillées au barbecue.

On the weekly menu, I’d like to offer you the charismatic Vincent Cavangh. Anathema is a classy band playing a music “for the heart, for the soul”. That’s what Vincent, whose French, as you will see at the end of the video, is getting better and better, said. An interview in which the singer evokes Paris’ culinary temptations, the fact that his brother is a vegetarian and doesn’t drink, catering differences between England and France, and his very special concert in Montreal last year, opening for Blackfield.

Ce sont les propos de Vincent qui, vous pourrez le constater en fin de vidéo, parle de mieux en mieux notre langue. Une entrevue où le chanteur aborde les tentations culinaires de la vie parisienne, le végétarisme et l’abstinence d’alcool de son frère Daniel, la différence entre le catering en Angleterre et en France et ce concert très particulier à Montréal, l’année passée, en première partie de Blackfield.

Devin Townsend in Heavy Metal Food: holy cow, this is zen

Life is made up of encounters. Among those, there’s the ones that will touch you and make you grow. On December 14th, I was extremely lucky to talk privately and at length with the great Devin Townsend. We talked about the reason that led him to a vegetarian diet, his childhood, his passion for cows, his philosophical point of view on free will… and I even had the pleasure to offer him his first raw food meal in three months. To see him so touched by the dishes I’d cooked specifically for him was extremely gratifying. Yes, I’m decidedly a lucky guy.

On that day, I also learned a lesson in humility. Devin presented his way of getting his convictions through, without conflict or violence. He also confessed to the direct impact food has on his music and his daily actions. I met a humble man, highly intelligent, courteous, attentive to others and… at peace with himself. This particular interview will be divided in two parts, with a third video in which I will give you Heavy Metal Food Signature “Devin Townsend” recipes.

Devin Townsend dans Heavy Metal Food : l’entretien (vachement) zen

La vie est faite de rencontres. Parmi elles, il y a celles qui vous touchent et qui vous font grandir. Le 14 décembre dernier, j’ai ainsi eu l’immense chance de pouvoir m’entretenir longuement en tête-à-tête avec le génial Devin Townsend que Radio Metal avait déjà eu l’opportunité d’interviewer par le passé. Nous avons parlé des raisons qui l’ont poussé vers une alimentation végétarienne, de son enfance, de sa passion pour les vaches, de son point de vue philosophique sur notre faculté du libre-arbitre… et j’ai eu le plaisir de lui offrir son premier repas de Raw Food depuis ces trois derniers mois. Le voir si touché, face à ces mets que j’avais cuisinés spécialement pour lui a été très gratifiant. Oui, décidément, je suis bien chanceux.

Car ce jour-là, j’ai aussi pris une belle leçon d’humilité. Devin m’a présenté sa façon de faire passer ses convictions, sans violence, ni conflit. Il m’a confié l’impact direct qu’a la nourriture sur sa musique et ses actes au quotidien. J’ai trouvé en face de moi, un homme simple, d’une intelligence aigüe, courtois, attentif à l’autre et surtout… en paix avec lui-même. Je vous délivre cette entrevue particulière en deux parties avec une troisième dans laquelle je vous donnerai des recettes Heavy Metal Food Signature « Devin Townsend ».

HEAVY METAL FOOD: SEPTIC FLESH DON’T FALL FOR EXTREMES

Heavy Metal Food celebrated its first anniversary yesterday. One year of interviews, columns, recipes, militant videos and daily posts on Facebook. Thank you for your fidelity. You’ve given the lie to those who didn’t believe in it and, through your comments, you’ve undermined the many prejudices we remain the victims of.

During my interviews, I’m always surprised by what my guests tell me. Their lucid approach to their lifestyle and the honesty of their confidences are a great source of satisfaction to me. Because it’s not always easy for me to convince the youngest among you that eating healthy is highly important, and that being addicted to junk food, drugs and alcohol is a dangerous thing. The fact that all these musicians we admire confirm what Heavy Metal Food is trying to teach is a precious support. “Don’t fall for extremes. Don’t stint yourselves, but with moderation”, as Seth (vocals) from Septic Flesh says in the following interview. “Don’t fall into a kind the inevitable routine and temptations” life on tour is strewn with, as drummer Fotis insists.
