Rick Smith Sheds Some Light On Torche

Torche is a peculiar band. It’s hard to believe that not all has been said about music and yet contemporary artists always seem to be going around in circles. Perhaps that this is the sense that we get because the mass invasion of new bands, strongly aided by the simplicities of communication, recording, distribution, etc that is available to them today. Talent is merely a detail. When an artist opens up a creative door, others follow immediately. The orginal idea is drowned by the great mass of copies and its previous impact loses value.

Torche are part of the orginals. Luckily, at this moment they are the only ones like them. Should we expect the trend to spread? It’s hard to say. Who would want more heavy sludge mixed with pop melodies? We can’t say that this is a current fashion. Then again trends pick up very quickly…

Either way, we at Radio metal like Torche. And it just so happens that we received a box of invitations to listen to their new album, Songs For Singles, and have a chat with Rick Smith.

Rick Smith fait la lumière sur Torche

Torche est assurément un groupe singulier. Difficile de croire que tout n’a pas été dit en matière de musique tant les artistes contemporains donnent souvent l’impression de tourner en rond. Mais peut-être est-ce la sensation que provoque l’invasion massive des groupes en devenir, favorisés par les facilités de communication, d’enregistrement, de distribution, etc. qu’offre le monde d’aujourd’hui. Le talent n’est plus qu’un détail. Il suffit qu’un artiste ouvre une brèche créative pour qu’immédiatement des centaines d’autres s’y engouffrent comme des charognards. L’original se retrouve noyé dans la masse des copies carbone et l’impact de son œuvre réduite à néant.

Torche fait partie de ces originaux. Mais fort heureusement le groupe est encore seul sur son terrain de jeux. Doit-on pour autant s’attendre à une mode prochaine? Difficile à dire. Qui voudrait d’un sludge grassouillet serti de mélodies pop ? Ce n’est pas vraiment ce que l’on pourrait considérer « dans l’air du temps ». Mais l’air change vite de nos jours…

Toujours est il que nous, à Radio Metal, on kiffe Torche. Ça tombe bien, on a justement reçu un carton d’invitation pour écouter Songs For Singles, leur nouvel EP, et tailler le bout de gras avec le batteur Rick Smith.
