Mike Tramp: the hard rocker who wasn’t really one

With his new solo album, Cobblestone Street, Mike Tramp reveals us in the most sincere and authentic way what he’s always been: an acoustic artist. Even during White Lion’s golden age or Freak Of Nature’s sleazy and grungy era, Mike Tramp tells us, his compositions were born that way, before being transformed and played with distortion. That’s why he insists on breaking the falsest idea that people have concerning his personality: he’s no hard-rocker. But has this difference, this particularity, precisely, let all the bands he was into to allow themselves to stand out from others? Starting from this analysis, Mike Tramp reveals us in the following interview – or rather the following talk – his personality and his story. His sincere words will certainly interest his fans and will allow us to see his past works from a fresh perspective and therefore to understand them more.

Talking about past works, Mike Tramp did not skimp on confessions and revelations about White Lion, about the Return Of The Pride record, and about his ex-mate Vito Bratta, whom he’d want to act and answer to all the questions the fans have in mind.

Mike Tramp : le hard rocker qui n’en était pas vraiment un

Avec son nouvel album solo, Cobblestone Street, Mike Tramp dévoile de la manière la plus sincère et authentique qui soit ce qu’il a toujours été : un artiste acoustique. Même durant l’âge d’or de White Lion ou le plus sleaze et grungy Freak Of Nature, c’est ainsi que ses compositions ont commencé avant d’être transformées et électrisées, nous dit-il dans l’entretien qui suit. Voilà pourquoi il insiste pour briser la plus fausse des idées que les gens peuvent se faire à son sujet : il n’est, à la base, pas un hard rocker. Mais peut-être est-ce précisément cette différence, cette particularité, qui a permis aux groupes de hard rock auxquels il a participé de se démarquer ? A partir de ce constat, dans l’entretien – ou plutôt la discussion – qui suit, Mike Tramp décrypte avec nous sa personnalité et son histoire. Ses propos sincères ne manqueront pas de passionner ses fans et permettront de voir ses œuvres passées sous un regard neuf et de sans doute mieux les comprendre.

Mike Tramp : « It was a mistake to try to do a new version of White Lion »

Vocalist Mike Tramp fought long and hard between 1999 and 2008 to revive White Lion. It all started with a tribute album called Remembering White Lion; then, in 2003, came the announcement that the original line-up would reform, closely followed by a firm denial from the other musicians. The rest consisted in legal problems and various changes in the line-up of Mike Tramp’s White Lion, topped by the deafening silence of Vito Bratta, the band’s guitarist and Tramp’s historical partner in White Lion, who seemed to not want to hear anything about a reformation. This silence lasted until 2007, when the guitarist finally announced that his return had never been ruled out, and all that had kept him away during this time were family and health problems. Hope at the end of the tunnel for White Lion’s fans – met by silence again. In 2008, tired with waiting for the guitarist, Mike Tramp released Return Of The Pride under the name White Lion, which he’d been allowed to keep. The title is a direct reference to Pride, the band’s cornerstone second album.

Here’s a quick summary of past events, in order to fully appreciate what the singer confessed to us when we talked to him recently. « White Lion was over in ’91 and today it’s easy for me to say that it was a mistake to try to reform, or more precisely, do a new version of White Lion so late in my career when I already said goodbye to White Lion in ’91. » he told us abruptly. A « mistake », he says: the word is strong and shows how sorry Mike Tramp really is. He adds: « Unfortunately, I had to go record Return Of The Pride to look back and see that it had nothing to do with White Lion in the sound and that the only thing that was White Lion was the vocals. »

In the end, he had to put things straight: « White Lion was over in ’91 and there won’t be any reunion of any kind. »

Mike Tramp : « c’était une erreur d’essayer de faire une nouvelle version de White Lion »

C’était une longue bataille qu’avait engagé le chanteur Mike Tramp entre 1999 et 2008 pour faire revivre White Lion. Tout a commencé avec un album hommage intitulé Remembering White Lion, puis cela s’est enchaîné en 2003 avec une annonce de la reformation du line-up d’origine, suivie d’un démenti des autres musiciens. La suite a oscillé entre des variations de line-up du White Lion de Mike Tramp et problèmes légaux. Tout ceci sous le silence assourdissant de Vito Bratta, guitariste de la formation et binôme historique de Tramp dans White Lion, qui semblait ne pas vouloir entendre parler de reformer le groupe. Jusqu’en 2007, où le guitariste s’est enfin exprimé pour dévoiler qu’il n’avait en réalité jamais exclu le fait de revenir et que ce qui l’en avait empêché jusqu’à ce stade était des problèmes familiaux et de santé. Un espoir pour les fans de White Lion et puis… à nouveau le silence radio. Au bout du compte Mike Tramp, exaspéré d’attendre après le guitariste, sort en 2008 Return Of The Pride sous le nom de White Lion qu’il a pu conserver, un album qui fait directement référence à Pride, le second album et référence dans la discographie du groupe .

Voici donc un bref rappel des événements passés pour mieux mesurer ce que nous a confessé le chanteur lorsque nous nous sommes entretenus avec lui cette semaine. « White Lion est fini depuis 1991 et aujourd’hui il est facile pour moi d’affirmer que c’était une erreur d’essayer de reformer, ou plus précisément, de faire une nouvelle version de White Lion si tard dans ma carrière alors que j’ai déjà dit au revoir à White Lion en 91 » nous a-t-il dit abruptement. Une « erreur » dit-il, le mot est fort et montre à quel point Mike Tramp regrette. Il poursuit : « Malheureusement, il a fallu que j’enregistre Return Of The Pride pour regarder en arrière et me rendre compte qu’il n’avait rien à voir avec White Lion dans le son et que la seule chose qui sonne White Lion était le chant. »

Il finit par mettre les choses au clair de façon définitive : « White Lion a été arrêté en 91 et il n’y aura aucune reformation quelle qu’elle soit. »
