James Michael : « Sixx: A.M. a changé ma vie ! »

James Michael – producteur, mixeur, compositeur et conteur d’histoires comme il aime se définir – est un homme heureux. Ça se lit sur chaque trait de son visage, sur son sourire radieux et sincère, sur ses yeux pétillants, sur sa façon de parler du soleil qui brille dehors en préambule de notre rencontre. Non seulement il s’est fait un nom en tant que « magicien de studio », un peu à la manière d’un Desmond Child dont il se dit être l’élève et même si, humblement, il n’avouera jamais être à son niveau, mais désormais, il a aussi son groupe à lui avec lequel tout semble fonctionner dans le meilleur des mondes. Car, oui, si Sixx: A.M. a démarré sans autre prétention que d’offrir la bande son de l’autobiographie du bassiste de Mötley Crüe Nikki Sixx, intitulée The Heroin Diaries: A Year In The Life Of A Shattered Rock Star, petit à petit, avec l’alchimie et le succès grandissants pour catalyseurs, la collaboration s’est mutée en un véritable groupe de rock à part entière. Et avec l’arrêt des activités de Mötley Crüe, l’horizon de Sixx: A.M. semble plus que jamais dégagé.

D’horizon dégagé il est question également d’un point de vu créatif, car là a été, précisément, la raison d’être de ce troisième album, Modern Vintage, en cherchant à retrouver la liberté que s’octroyait les groupes de rock il y a de ça plusieurs décennies et qui semble s’être parfois un peu perdue. Mais le mieux est encore que James Michael vous raconte tout ça avec ses propres mots dans l’entretien qui suit. Un entretien où nous avons en sus cherché à mieux connaître le chanteur, sa vision artistique, son parcours, ses aspirations, etc.

James Michael – producer, mixer, composer and storyteller, as he likes to define himself – is a happy man. You can see it in his radiant smile and sparkling eyes, hear it in the way he talks about the sun that’s shining outside as an introduction to our interview. The man has already made a name for himself as a “studio magician”, like a new Desmond Child – but although he confesses to being a follower of Child’s, he’s too humble to claim he’s reached his level. Now he’s got his very own band, with which everything seems to be great in the world. Sixx: A.M. started out as a side-project that would allow Mötley Crüe’s bassist Nikki Sixx to write a soundtrack to his autobiography, The Heroin Diaries: A Year In The Life Of A Shattered Rock Star. Step by step, with chemistry and success acting as catalysts, the initial collaboration became a rock band in its own right. And now that Mötley Crüe’s career is drawing to a close, the future looks bright for Sixx: A.M.

From a creative point of view, the raison d’être of the band’s third album, Modern Vintage, was to find the freedom that rock bands enjoyed several decades ago, and which seems to have been lost along the way. But it would be better to let James Michael tell you this in his own words in the following interview, where we strived to better understand the singer, his artistic vision, his background, his aspirations, etc.
