Intronaut refuse to compromise their creativity

The story of Intronaut would be enough to discourage any musician willing to try and make a living with his passion. Just imagine: you can open for Tool, Meshuggah, and Mastodon on their American tours, play sold-out venues every night, release critically-acclaimed albums, and still not make enough money to survive. That’s the harsh reality of today’s musical industry. But it won’t deter a band like Intronaut, who put free artistic creation before mercenary considerations.

Firmly rooted in jazz, with a few flirty jaunts towards Indian or African percussions, Intronaut’s musical statement is rather broad and doesn’t restrict itself to post-core/sludge, far too narrow an environment for these musicians. One of the band’s two vocalists/guitarists, Dave Timnick – also a member of V.T. Void, Justin Chancellor’s (Tool) other band – talked to us about Intronaut’s composition process, a passion for jazz so strong it transpires in their work, as well as their latest album, Habitual Levitations, which places the bar slightly higher than its predecessor, Valley Of Smoke (2010), especially vocally.

L’histoire d’Intronaut aurait de quoi décourager n’importe quel musicien prêt à se lancer dans l’aventure musicale pour vivre de sa passion… En effet, on peut ouvrir pour Tool, Meshuggah ou Mastodon sur leurs tournées américaines, jouer sold-out tous les soirs, sortir quatre albums salués par la critique internationale et ne pas gagner suffisamment sa vie pour ne vivre uniquement que de son art. C’est la dure réalité financière de l’industrie musicale d’aujourd’hui. Mais ce n’est pas ce qui dérangera un groupe comme Intronaut, attaché avant toute considération mercantile à sa liberté de création artistique.

Enraciné dans le jazz et allant parfois flirter avec les percussions indiennes ou africaines, le propos musical d’Intronaut voit large et ne se cantonne pas à un univers post-core/sludge dans lequel il évolue néanmoins mais qui est bien trop étroit pour le potentiel d’ouverture de ses musiciens. L’un des deux guitaristes-chanteurs, Dave Timnick, aussi membre de M.T. Void, l’autre groupe de Justin Chancellor (Tool), nous parle du processus de composition d’Intronaut, de leur passion pour le jazz qui ressort forcément dans leurs créations, ainsi que du dernier opus, Habitual Levitations, qui place la barre un peu plus haut que le précédent Valley Of Smoke (2010), notamment d’un point de vue vocal.
